Türkiye'de koronavirüs: Cerrahpaşa'da bir gün
We are entering the intensive care unit from here.
It was an operating room before, now it is used for intensive care.
We are entering the intensive care from here.
It was an operating room before, now it is used for intensive care.
Please Please It is very hard lying here and looking at the ceiling of the intensive care room.
We lost the patient.
He was here just before.
His general situation was severe.
But we could not save him.
-There was a patient lying there just couple of minutes ago when we were speaking.
Is it that patient? -Yes! -We lost him.
-Yes! Professor, his team, doctors.
Seriously, there is a huge effort.
Nurses, everybody.
They are putting so much effort to keep people alive.
These days will pass eventually.
And when these days pass, we will say that we were there and we did our best.
A day at Cerrahpasa Cerrahpasa Medical School Hospital As the crew of BBC Turkish, we were examined before the shooting Firstly we will conduct our shooting in the Intensive Care Unit Now, we will take you to the operating room.
Its name is the operating room but it became an intensive care room now.
You will be dressed with personal protection equipments, just like a staff from intensive care.
Then, you will get lost inside with them.
Because, everybody gets lost there.
No identity.
Please.
We completely renovated this area as an Intensive care unit.
Behind the wall at the end of the corridor we have our usual ICU and we merged it with this one here.
This place is the unit where the battle against COVID-19 is at its busiest At this moment we have 31 patients.
Roughly we release 2 – 3 patients everyday and take 2 – 3 new ones.
But we are worried that there will be more patients in the upcoming days.
And if thats the case we are capable of extending our ICU unit capacity.
The alarm is going off, the alarms indicate a change of a patients condition.
One of the important features of the ICU unit is its alarms.
You will constanly be hearing different alarms going off here in the ICU.
The alarms are of crucial importance to the patients condition.
The patients here in the ICU are critical patients as we call them.
A critical patient is if not treated directly, imminent death or disability might occur.
And the severe respiratory failure caused by Covid-19 render the patients as critial patients.
At most one third of the patients can breathe on their own and their problems can be solved with little help.
But the vast majority of patients need severe level respiratory support and organ supports because their other organ functions are impaired.
And unfortunately, a large proportion of these patients need to be treated with anesthesia.
and this process takes at least 7-8 days.
Patients lie face down.
We make them lie face down to relieve their edema and oxygenation.
That's why some patients lie face down.
This is a useful procedure.
Looks like it.
We hook up the patients with a mechanical ventilator to give them respiratory support.
We can adjust the respiratory support any time pursuant to the patient's condition.
And these ventilators have to be controlled every continously.
We haven't had any problems with equipment and devices.
We had new devices and the ones we were already using.
So Cerrahpasa Medicine Faculty had no lack of mechanical ventilators at least for now.
We may need more capacity from now on but I can say we do not a problem like that at the moment.
That patient is an agitated patient.
“No need to cry.
” “Calm down.
” Some patients here can be delirious or can't fully adapt to the environment.
Patients may scream, become agressive when experiencing pain.
They may try to take off what we put on them.
They may try to remove their tubes from the devices and liquids We experience people like this time to time.
Let's go here.
A concious patient in intesive care spoke to us.
Our patient here is awake and can sit and eat.
I've been here for 3 days.
I couldn't breath very well.
I couldn't do this (breathes) Now I can breathe like this.
I'm 46.
I didn't have any diseases other than diabetes.
Maybe I had something in my lungs.
I was in standart care for 7 days.
I'm here for 3 days now.
I'm really well now.
Thank you.
Really.
“Do you smoke?” “Do you smoke cigarettes?” “Not now.
I used to but I quit.
” “When did you quit?” “Has it been 10 years?” “Okay.
” “You can go inside.
” “Inside?” “Yes.
” Another critic at fighting Covid-19 in Cerrahpasa is it's where people come to when they are suspecting the virus.
People who come here are examined and tested.
After the results, the patients are treated while standing or lying down.
When we first opened this polyclinic, the number of people that came here per day was between 50 to 100.
Then this number went up to 150.
Tomorrow it was 328.
But despite this number increasing, the number of people who need treatment isn't increasing.
And lately, we have discharged more patients than we took in.
This has been the case for the last week.
We took in about 500 patients.
We have about 170-180 patients in the hospital.
The in-patients are in Covid-19 treatment rooms in another building of the hospital.
This is the surgical floor of our hosptial.
After this pandemic was announced, we reserved this floor for coronavirus patients.
When they get well, we send them home.
The floors around here are reserved for in-patient treatments.
“How are you feeling?” “I'm better than before, thank god.
” “I came once, got tested and was nothing came up.
So I went back home.
” “I isolated myself in home for 12 days but my coughing didn't go away.
” “The back pain started.
” “Loss of appetite, mouth drying, loss of taste kicked in.
“I had a slight sore throat, so I came back.
” “I got examined again.
I had a CT scan, gave blood samples.
” “Got tested, it was positive.
I'm here since Friday morning.
” “The medicines I took was very helpful.
” “My coughing has lessened.
I couldn't speak without coughing before.
” People shouldn't think that we are slackening our measures when people get better.
But nearly 93% of our patients are healing when we treat our patients as needed.
In fact 85% of them heal without needing in-patient treatment.
“They heal in their homes.
